Does Social Media Influence Search Engine Optimization?
Most savvy Online marketers who spend their time generating search engine traffic think Twitter is really a total waste of time. But they may not be able to ignore it for too much longer now that Google’s Social Search has come onto the scene. If you don’t know what that is, it displays search results from people with whom you are “friends” on social media sites in a different location at the bottom of the first page of the Google search engine results pages (SERPs) for any keyword. So, what is a social circle? It includes anybody you are connected to via general social networking sites, like Google Friend Connect on blogs, Twitter, MySpace, a relatively new site called Mixx and other social media outlets. Your own blogs and Web sites can also be part of the results. Simply add all your sites, blogs, and social media profile addresses to your Google profile to give all the people who follow you the chance to see your links when doing searches relevant to those topics.
This groundbreaking new approach by Google, plus the fact that Twitter posts are now being indexed in Google’s regular search results, are why I’m so gung-ho about using TweetAdder automated Twitter software to market my blog posts and HubPages hubs on Twitter. The software helps me manage my Twitter account, which helps me stay up-to-date with my Twitter account. Because of this, my tweets are consistently indexed, and I also have more material for Google to display in their social search results area. So although very little traffic is directly generated from people actually clicking through from my Twitter page, Twitter generates traffic to my sites and blog through these alternate ways. And that traffic has the potential to increase over time as my Twitter PageRank increases, causing the rankings for my tweets to be even higher in the regular search results.
Although it’s of lesser importance than posting to Twitter and other social sites, I also like to make sure all my social accounts look professional. If you use social media sites for business marketing, then having a professional look is a must. To accomplish this, you can use clip art and adapt it in online applications that make icons. (Avatars or icons are those tiny images, usually square, that are displayed near your user name on your social media profile. They can be made of photos, clip art graphics or a combination of the two.) I’ve played with a variety of icon makers and created many images. Using multiple icons has allowed me to brand my various business ventures appropriately, because I can get as many different looks as I need. You’d be surprised how powerful those tiny images can be. After all, that’s usually how you make your first impression on a social site.
